Abstract / Introduction / Summary:
Thirty-eight specimens of the callichirid ghost shrimps Lepidophthalmus tridentatus (von Martens, 1868), collected from the tidal zone of sandy or sandy-mud flats in the Kagoshima mainland and Amami-oshima, Kikai-jima, Tokuno-shima, Okinoerabu-jima, Miyako-jima, Ishigaki-jima, and Kohama-jima islands, were reported here with comments of their habitats and bopyrid parasites. In Japanese waters, L. tridentatus has previously been recorded from limited sites of six islands in the Nansei Islands: Osumi Islands (Yaku-shima island), Amami Islands (Amami-oshima island), Okinawa Islands (Okinawa-jima and Kume-jima islands), Yaeyama Islands (Ishigaki-jima and Iriomote-jima islands). Thus, present specimens, collected from the Kagoshima mainland, and Kikai-jima, Tokuno-shima, Okinoerabu-jima, Miyako-jima and Kohama-jima islands represent the first records in each area. Other specimens from Amami-oshima, Okinawa-jima and Ishigaki-jima islands represent the newly reported habitat from each island. The Kagoshima mainland specimen indicates the northernmost record for the species.
